Chess.com Boots Out Yelena Dembo

Making the unusual headlines today is Chess.com's decision to unceremoniously boot out WGM Yelena Dembo. No detailed information was forthcoming from chess.com but word has spread that there was an "anomaly" in her CC games.

Her account (http://www.chess.com/members/view/YelenaDembo) on chess.com is currently being listed as "disabled".

Addendum: On chess.com's forums, a forummer Steve Collyer (UK) have put up his analysis of Ms Dembo's games vs 2200++ opponents. His findings are listed below.

Please note that this is not to be taken as the gospel truth. If you would like to find the correlation, feel free to use the posted games below for your own analysis with your own engines. Me? I would prefer if Ms Dembo's games get a good looking over by a respected GM. I still find the whole incident disturbing.

You can find Ms Dembo's responses on chessgames.com at: http://www.chessgames.com/~Yelena+Dembo

In another thread, he posted Ms Dembo's last 18 CC games and I quote:

"Here are the games which I will analyse. Please note that the games are the most recently completed vs 2200+ rateds with 35+ total moves. There are 18 of these, and to complete the usual 20 game requirement I selected the 2 most recent games by near 2200's with 35+ total moves:"

  1. Tom,

There is quite some danger in non-experts trying to apply a complex statistical method. See the original academic articles on cheat detection and why the above can't be accepted as valid.

    Some open questions:

    1. When did the engine analysis begin, I.e. When were they considered to be out of the opening?
    2. Were forcing moves discarded, in other words where are one or two moves are far and away better than the rest.
    3. Was a consistent search depth used, or did they used a fixed time?

    We could go on.

  2. Collyer manipulates the results by including forced moves (which will match with an engine 100% of the time) and using chess openings databases that are...obsolete. Consequently players being "investigated" will get higher match up rates because the opening moves from a more current openings database (which may or may not have engine moves in it but...) will also match the engine's first choice much of the time. Collyer is at best a "C" class player (USCF 1600) who investigates players based on ratings envy, or if a particular player is unpopular due to forum posts. Selection of players to investigate is never random and frequently malicious, and the results are known ahead of time. Collyer also uses different hardware and reflection time for the engines in order to get the results he is expecting. In the above games doesn't anyone find it interesting that many of the games were drawn vs. players rated 300-400 players lower? A GM with an Engine will almost always stomp a lower rated player even if they are using the same engine. Something reeks here.

  3. To be fair to Collyer though, he has said that he didn't close Yelena's account and that the match rate method was only used by a group of volunteers to suggest possible cheats to chess.com staff.
They apparently went on to investigate YD's games there & International Master David Pruess later decided to shut her account down & label her a cheat.

Apparently the games above are totally error free. There isn't even the slightest mistake (-0.25 of a pawn or more) in any one & that is pretty damning. It would be interesting if anyone could prove otherwise!

I read that the average opponent rating from the 20 chess.com games from the is 2342.85. That doesn't sound like patzer opposition to me.

I should have thought chess.com would have wanted to be pretty certain before closing the account of an IM & wouldn't do it simply on a whim.

  4. @ACFD

    Bullshit!

Forced moves are always included, true, but they are included in benchmark games too, so final verdicts are NOT biased. Collyer has always used up-to-date opening database, moreover it was repeatedly proven that opening book has only little impact in final statistics.

The truth is that some banned cheaters, reported by volunteers running Collyer's or similar method, poke their ugly head here and there to twaddle something about fairness and make personal attacks.

  5. And this too comes from a player who was also banned for cheating off chess.com? Draw your own conclusions people.

  6. As Marie, says it is very difficult to prove cheating when you're online.

Just last week, in an online Blitz game, my opponent accused me of cheating using a computer. I looked up the game afterwards and I was laughing. Stockfish/Fritz didn't even look at my moves among the top 5. And it was only when the moves became forced, that my moves reached the top 3 moves played.

I don't play correspondence chess btw. These days, rather than playing based on ability, it's more of a case of who has the better software/hardware (first) and then able to find the correct variation and to follow through on that variation after it's been computer checked.

    cheers
